Workshop on Longitudinal Data of the National Educational Panel Study in Germany

Posted on Tuesday 16th April 2013

Abstract: The workshop provides a gentle introduction to longitudinal data collected by the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) which is one of the largest panel studies in Europe. Having a thorough life course perspective the NEPS surveys data on competencies, educational processes, educational decisions, and returns to education in formal, nonformal, and informal contexts on more than 60,000 individuals. Albeit NEPS is localized in Germany, data sets and documentation are available in English language facilitating usage of NEPS data by the international scientific community.

In the workshop Dr. Jan Skopek, post-doctoral researcher and operational manager of the NEPS research data center, will first give an introduction to the multi-cohort sequence design of NEPS. This involves an overview to cohort-specific study designs, sampling procedures, and survey contents. Second, basic principles of data set organization are explained. Furthermore, information on ways of accessing the NEPS data is given. Thereby, working with RemoteNEPS a fully equipped and safe research environment provided by the NEPS is introduced. Third, exploring the research potentials of NEPS practical step-by-step examples using NEPS data will be provided in Stata. Particularly, exercises will treat (1) methodological issues of longitudinal data management, (2) practical issues of preparing life course data, and (3) issues of longitudinal data analyses as well. Researchers unfamiliar with NEPS but also those having experience as well will profit from this introductory workshop.
